Whenever a page on your website does not load, an error message shall be shown to the visitor. Since there are different errors, there are different pages which will show up, but what is typical for all of them is that they're generic and probably will have nothing that resembles the layout of your website, which could be frustrating for any visitor. This is the primary reason why website hosting providers have introduced a function named Custom Error Pages. For a variety of different errors, website visitors shall see your customized content, which could be informative or funny, based on your preference, and that will match the layout of your website, so the pages shall not seem like they are not part of your site at all. You could use this option for a variety of errors - 400 (Bad request), 401 (Unauthorized), 403 (Forbidden) and 404 (File not Found).

Custom Error Pages in Web Hosting

If you order a web hosting from us, you shall be able to set personalized error pages for your Internet sites easily and quickly, because this function is a part of all of our packages. The moment you've created the files and uploaded them to your hosting account, you should check out the Hosted Domains section of your Hepsia CP and click on the Edit button for the specific domain or subdomain. Inside the pop-up that will be displayed, you shall see drop-down options menus for all 4 types of errors and for each one of them you can select an Apache default page, a generic page from our system or a customized page. In case you choose the 3rd option, you should only input the URL to the file that you have uploaded and save the change. Another way to set custom made error pages is to create an .htaccess file inside the domain or subdomain folder and to include a few lines of program code in it. If you do not have preceding experience or if you're simply unsure how to do that, you can simply copy/paste the code from our Knowledge Base article on that subject.

If needed, you will be able to revert this change at any time and in exactly the same way. If you would like, you can use an .htaccess file as well. It has to be created/uploaded within the domain or subdomain folder belonging to the internet site whose error pages you want to modify and the content for this sort of file can be found in our Help article about this matter.
